I’m looking again for industrial-class process surveillance cameras.
Nothing extraordinary: basically see if a door is open or closed, if the light is on or off, if somebody is currently inside or not…
- They need to resist industrial environment, meaning dust, humidity, “extreme” temperatures (-20°C – +50°C), …
- They need to be fitted with I.R. spots (for work in the darkness), optionally white lighting as well.
- They need (for convenience) to be powered by standard PoE (EndSpan).
- They don’t need WiFi (if present, it should be possible to disable it, for security reasons)
- They need to not rely on any Internet connectivity, for security reasons
- They need to not rely on any “cloud-based” service, even for configuration, as industrial facilities owners do not want their inside process to be watchable remotely by unknown third parties or foreign countries political authorities.
- They need to not be bound to a specific vendor (either at codec level as well as regarding the server-side of the project, to avoid Vendor Lock-in)
- They must not contain any “A.I.-based face recognition feature”, with or without cloud connectivity, automatic picture storage or other “security feature” bullshit !
- They need to deliver the video-signal in a standardized format (AVI, MJpeg, MPeg-4, H264, H265, …)
- They need to be able to deliver low resolutions streams (such as 1024×768 or even less), as such industrial process monitoring does not need 4K resolutions
- They need to be able to deliver low FPS streams, for the same reason: a door does not open 30 times in a second, so…
For convenience, it is better to have a fixation that can be screwed directly on a electrical plastic box, with the cable passing in the center of it, so that once installed, no cable will be accessible neither visible

- They don’t need to implement image overlays, such as timestamps, channel name, …
- They don’t need to implement movement detection, local recordings, …
- They don’t need to implement configurable privacy maskable areas.
It is intended to be used remotely, through low speed Internet access (such as aDSL), so the required bandwidth is important to keep reasonably low.
The video server will be ZoneMinder, so we need the URL scheme that allows to fetch the video stream (either plain UDP or through RTSP), such as:
rtsp://user:Password@ipaddress:554/ch1/video
We are used to purchase it through Planet, but their last cameras are delivered with documentation (User Manuals) that are still referring to Windows XP, Internet Explorer, a proprietary plugin that requires ActiveX, …
“Technologies” that were largely outdated already at the very beginning of this millennium…



Hopefully, we use the most used operating system in the world, since decades now, so wouldn’t purchase hardware that requires such old-fashioned and unmaintained “technologies” and non standard operating systems…
I hope your modern cameras are using the World-Wide Web standard since 2014: HTML5…

An alternative solution, as we need three to four cameras by remote location, may be a coax/PAL/analog based solution:
- three to four analog cameras
- preferably powered by the coax cable (for convenience)
- and a analog-to-IP encoder, that might deliver the four streams through IP simultaneously

So a complete kit of three or four cameras and the analog-to-IP encoder may be a good solution.
