The company carried out comparisons between two installations of the same version of the Oracle database, on the same hardware, but running on Windows and Linux respectively. The results showed a <strong>performance gap of around 30% !<\/strong> As Oracle is a US-based company, it contacted Microsoft to ask for advice on the internal Windows settings that would help to reduce this gap.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Microsoft\u2019s response was as follows: <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"alignwide has-primary-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-222f1ec4288f559197a675f58a89adbb wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"border-width:1px;margin-right:0;margin-left:0;padding-top:var(--wp--preset--spacing--x-small);padding-right:var(--wp--preset--spacing--medium);padding-bottom:var(--wp--preset--spacing--x-small);padding-left:var(--wp--preset--spacing--medium)\">\u00ab <strong><em>Read the Microsoft Windows licence terms carefully: <br>you are not permitted to compare the performance of our software <br>with that of another !<\/em><\/strong> \u00bb<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Oracle therefore published the results and <strong>switched to Linux<\/strong>, which it has continued to recommend ever since. Many other demanding and innovative companies have made the same choice; even <a href=\"https:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/if-you-know-linux-microsoft-wants-you-2015-10\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/if-you-know-linux-microsoft-wants-you-2015-10\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong><em>Microsoft has switched to Linux to run its own cloud<\/em><\/strong><\/a> (Azure, publicly stated on September 2015) and now <strong><em><a href=\"https:\/\/azure.microsoft.com\/en-us\/products\/azure-linux\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/azure.microsoft.com\/en-us\/products\/azure-linux\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">proposes and supports its own Linux distribution<\/a><\/em><\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-full has-custom-border\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"653\" height=\"367\" src=\"https:\/\/abilit.eu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/image-10.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2490\" style=\"border-width:1px;box-shadow:var(--wp--preset--shadow--solid)\" srcset=\"https:\/\/abilit.eu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/image-10.png 653w, https:\/\/abilit.eu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/image-10-300x169.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 653px) 100vw, 653px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Windows suffers from numerous issues that hinder application software efficiency. Linux is also available in \u2018real-time\u2019 versions, which are ideal for situations where system latency is critical.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><em>Linux exists since 1992. <\/em><\/strong><br><strong><em>So how does it handle backwards compatibility issues better than Windows ?<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Linux has a highly efficient and well-designed library version management system, inherited from the Unix tradition. Furthermore, software can be recompiled (as its source code is generally available) to adapt to new API versions. There is therefore no requirement for long-term <strong>binary backward compatibility<\/strong> within the Linux ecosystem.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Windows, on the other hand, may offer better performance for gaming, as it is optimized for interactive software designed natively for Windows, featuring proprietary GPU drivers, such as games or single-user applications that are heavily reliant on the graphical user interface, as well as for software published by Microsoft itself, since these are developed with knowledge of undocumented features\/API of the operating system (an obstacle to free and undistorted competition).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is why 100% of the <a href=\"https:\/\/top500.org\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/top500.org\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong><em>top 500 more powerful computer systems<\/em><\/strong><\/a> in the world are running on Linux, since years !<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-large has-custom-border\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"668\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Kernel-based_Virtual_Machine\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Kernel-based_Virtual_Machine\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer Linux is <strong>the kernel of choice<\/strong> for routers, switches, servers and access points, as well as for cars, watches, smartphones, tablets, set-top boxes, smart TVs, programmable logic controllers and, soon, your connected microwaves and fridges !<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-large has-custom-border\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"576\" src=\"https:\/\/abilit.eu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/image-2-1024x576.png\" alt=\"Linux - no real alternatives for embedded or real-time applications\" class=\"wp-image-2446\" style=\"border-width:1px\" srcset=\"https:\/\/abilit.eu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/image-2-1024x576.png 1024w, https:\/\/abilit.eu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/image-2-300x169.png 300w, https:\/\/abilit.eu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/image-2-768x432.png 768w, https:\/\/abilit.eu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/image-2.png 1244w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-text-color has-base-color has-alpha-channel-opacity has-base-background-color has-background\" style=\"margin-bottom:var(--wp--preset--spacing--small)\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"Security\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">3\u00b0 Security<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Windows is prompt to get viruses and ransomware.<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It has long been claimed that this was because \u2018it was the most widely used operating system on the Internet (<a href=\"https:\/\/bfrere.world\/WITMUOSITW.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong><em>which has not been true for many years<\/em><\/strong><\/a>) and that hackers therefore targeted it as a priority. This claim is totally false, as <a href=\"https:\/\/bfrere.world\/WITMUOSITW.pdf\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/bfrere.world\/WITMUOSITW.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong><em>Linux now runs on around 90% of devices connected to the Internet<\/em><\/strong><\/a>, and still does not require any antivirus software, except maybe to <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/ClamAV\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/ClamAV\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong><em>detect files dropped onto it by infected Windows devices<\/em><\/strong><\/a> when used as a file server.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There are technical reasons why <strong>Windows is prone to infections<\/strong>: poor architectural choices at the operating system level, amongst other things, but that is beyond the scope of this article. The fact is that Linux is far more resistant to all kinds of software attacks, though this should not lead you to lower your guard, as the main threat to a computer system resides in<strong> its users<\/strong> (internal attacks or misuse)!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-large has-custom-border\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"751\" src=\"https:\/\/abilit.eu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/image-9-1024x751.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2483\" style=\"border-width:1px\" srcset=\"https:\/\/abilit.eu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/image-9-1024x751.png 1024w, https:\/\/abilit.eu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/image-9-300x220.png 300w, https:\/\/abilit.eu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/image-9-768x563.png 768w, https:\/\/abilit.eu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/image-9.png 1200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Aside of that, the US legislation makes Windows (as well as any other proprietary operating system published by an US-based company) <strong>unfitted for almost any use<\/strong>.
